Barnsley Custody Suite

South Yorkshire Police

Contract Value £6.2m
Start Date October 2015
Scheduled Completion October 2016
Contract Form NEC3 Option A

A project which has been in planning for five years; to deliver a state of the art custody facility within budgetary and time constraints.

Key facts about the project

  • A 20 cell radial design custody facility adjacent to the DHQ replacing the existing suite to service the Barnsley area.
  • Demolition of existing suite and underground tunnel, services diversions and temporary cell accommodation
  • New hard and soft landscaping as well as public entrance to raise the quality of the public realm.

Key benefits

The building is on a tight city centre site next to the operational DHQ. Willmott Dixon have worked closely with the Client to create an access and logistics plan to minimise disruption and sustain health and safety.

Key results

  • The decision for the provision of temporary cells to be located off site during the construction has allowed the design to maximise the tight site and maintain car parking.
  • The design has achieved a functional layout in line with the latest Home Office standards and links well into the existing DHQ.
  • The mix of traditional and modern materials has provided a contemporary building generating a positive addition to the civic and public realm of central Barnsley.

Willmott Dixon and Scape have brought together an experienced team to develop and deliver a functional and efficient design for the Client. The facility will provide a modern, naturally lit, acoustically treated working environment for all users
